How to track your UPI spends without typing every payment

Your UPI app shows every payment and still can't tell you where the month went. Here are three ways to fix that, and the one people actually keep using.

Why your UPI app isn't an expense tracker

A UPI app keeps a history, not a budget. It lists payments one by one, only for that app, and never groups them into food, travel or shopping. If you pay with two apps and a card, no single screen shows what you spent this month or where it went.

That gap matters more every year. UPI handled about 24,162 crore payments in FY2025-26, and most of them were small: 86% of payments to shops and merchants were under ₹500. Small payments are exactly the ones nobody remembers by the 20th.

So the history is there. What's missing is the adding up. The three methods below do that job in different ways, and they ask very different amounts of effort from you.

Three ways to track UPI spends, compared

How each method compares
MethodEffortWhen you see itWhat it misses
Write it down (notes or a sheet)Every payment, by handRight away, if you keep goingWhatever you forget to note
Bank statement once a month30 to 60 minutes a monthAfter the month is overMerchant names are often cryptic
Automatic, from payment alertsA few taps a weekAs you payCash, unless you add it

There's no wrong answer here. The right one is the method you'll still be using in March. Most people start with the first, burn out, and either quit or move to the third.

Option 1: write every payment down

Writing payments down in a notes app or a Google Sheet costs nothing and keeps your data with you. It works for a week or two. It stops working the first busy day you skip it, because one gap makes the totals wrong and a wrong total feels pointless to keep.

If you go this way, keep it to four columns: date, amount, category, and a one-word note. Fewer categories help too. Food, travel, bills, shopping and "other" covers most months.

The honest catch is the ₹30 chai and the ₹49 auto top-up. They're too small to feel worth writing down, and together they're usually the biggest surprise.

Option 2: read your bank statement once a month

A monthly statement catches every UPI payment from that account, so nothing slips through. The problem is timing. By the time you read it, the month is gone and you can't change any of it. It also shows UPI references and VPAs, so many lines need detective work.

Statements are still worth a look for one thing: spotting payments you don't recognise, including forgotten subscriptions. If you find one, our guide on finding and cancelling UPI AutoPay walks through stopping it.

Option 3: let your phone's payment alerts do it

Every UPI payment already sends you a notification from the UPI app and usually an SMS from your bank. An expense tracker on Android can read those alerts on your phone and log each payment with its amount and merchant. You don't share a bank password, and you don't type anything.

This is the method that tends to stick, because it asks almost nothing of you. Your job shrinks to fixing the odd wrong entry and glancing at the totals.

A few things to check before you allow notification or SMS access to any app:

  • Where your data goes. Read the privacy policy. Good apps read alerts on the phone and say exactly what leaves it.
  • Which alerts it trusts. A payment mentioned in a WhatsApp chat shouldn't log itself as a spend.
  • How you fix mistakes. Wrong entries will happen. You want a one-tap Undo.

What to look for in a UPI expense tracker app

Pick an app that logs payments on its own, never asks for your net banking password or UPI PIN, works across every UPI app you use, and shows patterns rather than a long list. Price matters less than whether you'll open it twice a week.

  1. Logs from payment alerts or bank SMS, so you don't type every spend.
  2. Never asks for a bank login or UPI PIN. It can't move money.
  3. Works across Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and your bank's app.
  4. Groups spends into categories you can change.
  5. Shows your repeat habits, not only a list.
  6. Lets you add cash spends in a couple of taps.

The 10-minute Sunday check

Tracking only helps if you look. Ten minutes once a week is enough: check the week's total against what you meant to spend, find the one category that grew, and decide one small change for next week. Weekly beats monthly because there's still time to act.

  1. Look at the total

Compare this week with your weekly number. If you don't have one, divide your monthly wants budget by four.

  2. Find the one that grew

Food delivery and shopping are the usual ones. Pick a single category, not five.

  3. Choose one change

"Cook on Tuesday and Thursday" is a plan. "Spend less" isn't.

If one category keeps winning, the post on why UPI makes you spend more has five habits that put the pause back.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to give an expense app notification or SMS access?

It can be, if the app reads alerts on your phone, never asks for your bank password or UPI PIN, and its privacy policy says exactly what data leaves the device. Notification access lets an app read alerts, not move money.

Can I track UPI payments from more than one app?

Yes. An app that reads payment alerts and bank SMS picks up payments from Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and your bank's own app, because each one sends an alert or your bank sends a text.

How do I track cash spends along with UPI?

Add cash by hand. In a tracker that logs UPI on its own, cash is the only thing left to type, which usually takes a few seconds a day.

How often should I check my UPI spending?

Once a week is enough for most people. A 10-minute check on Sunday shows what grew while there's still time to change next week.
