The short answer
If you pay mostly by UPI on Android and want spends to log themselves, PennyWise AI is our pick: it reads payment alerts on your phone, never asks for a bank login, and its AI Coach answers questions from your own numbers. If you prefer typing every expense, Money Manager is the most complete manual app.
How we judged them
We looked at five things that matter for people in India: whether UPI payments get tracked without typing, whether the app asks for a bank login, what it costs, whether it helps you change habits or only lists spends, and what else the app is trying to sell you.
- Tracks UPI on its own. Most Indian payments are small UPI ones. Typing each is where tracking dies.
- No bank password. Reading alerts on the phone is enough. Your net banking login should stay yours.
- Cost. Free to start, with a fair price for extras.
- Helps you change. A list of payments is history. Patterns and next steps are what save money.
- Focus. Is it an expense tracker, or a lending or investing app with tracking added on?
Six expense tracker apps compared
| App | How it tracks spends | Cost | Play rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|

| axio (formerly Walnut) | Reads bank SMS | Free | 4.5 (2.6 lakh ratings) | SMS-based tracking at no cost |
| Money Manager (Realbyte) | You enter each spend; double-entry bookkeeping | Free with ads; paid upgrade | 4.6 (4.7 lakh ratings) | Detailed manual tracking |

1. PennyWise AI: best for UPI payers who want it automatic
PennyWise AI logs payments from the alerts your bank, UPI apps and bank texts already send, with Undo on every one. It finds repeat habits and forgotten subscriptions, and on Plus its AI Coach answers questions like "why was this month expensive?" from your own spending. It never asks for a bank password.
Good: payments log themselves across Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and bank apps. It shows what you can spend a day after bills and savings, and a health score out of 100 with the reasons behind it. On Plus you can cap apps like Swiggy and Zomato and see what's left when you open them.
Watch for: it's new, launched in 2026, so it has few reviews yet. It's Android only. The AI Coach, voice logging and the six-month SMS import are on Plus (₹79 a month); the free Coach answers twice a month without AI.
2. axio (formerly Walnut): SMS tracking, free
axio is the app many people still know as Walnut. Its Play listing calls it an SMS-based money management app: it reads your bank SMS to track spends, bills and card dues, and it's free. The same app also offers pay-later credit, personal loans and fixed deposits.
Good: a long track record and free SMS-based tracking. Watch for: lending and investment products sit in the same app as your spending, so decide whether you want that mix.
3. Money Manager: the most complete manual tracker
Money Manager by Realbyte is built for people who like entering every spend themselves. It uses double-entry bookkeeping, handles budgets, cards and transfers between accounts, and has detailed statistics. The free version shows ads; a paid upgrade removes them.
Good: very thorough, highly rated, and you're fully in control. Watch for: every UPI payment has to be typed, which is where most people give up.
4. Wallet by BudgetBakers: bank sync and multi-currency
Wallet tracks spends through bank synchronisation where your bank is supported, through imports, or by hand. It handles multiple currencies and shared budgets well. Bank sync and the bigger features are on Premium.
Good: polished, strong for people with money in several currencies. Watch for: check whether your Indian bank is supported for sync before paying for Premium.
5. Monefy: the quickest manual logging
Monefy keeps manual tracking as fast as it can be: tap a category, type the amount, done. It syncs through your own Google Drive or Dropbox and handles multiple currencies. Extras are unlocked with a paid Pro version.
Good: almost no learning curve. Watch for: it's still manual, so UPI-heavy months mean a lot of taps.
6. INDmoney: investing first, spends on the side
INDmoney is mainly an investing and trading app for Indian and US stocks, mutual funds and IPOs. It also offers a free bank account tracker for accounts linked to your mobile number, with expenditure analysis. Choose it if investing is your main reason to open the app.
Good: one place for investments and bank balances. Watch for: budgeting and daily spending are a side feature in a trading app.
Where PennyWise AI falls short
PennyWise AI isn't on iPhone, has no reviews yet because it's new, and doesn't connect to your bank for balances. It also doesn't trade stocks or give investment advice; the Coach explains your spending and never tells you what to buy. If any of those matter most, pick one of the others above.
“We'd rather you pick the right app than the wrong one with our name on it. If you type every spend happily, Money Manager will serve you well.”
