SMS expense tracker for India: how automatic tracking from bank texts works

Your bank already texts you about every payment. An SMS-based tracker turns those texts into a budget on its own. Here's how it works, which 46 banks PennyWise AI recognises, and what it never touches.

The short answer

An SMS-based expense tracker reads the debit and credit texts your bank sends after every UPI, card or bank payment, pulls out the amount, merchant and date, and logs it for you. In India that covers almost every way you pay, because banks text you for each one. It needs SMS permission on Android, not a bank login.

How automatic tracking from bank SMS works

  1. Your bank texts you

"Rs.450.00 debited from a/c XX1234 to SWIGGY UPI Ref no 123456789012". This arrives for UPI, card swipes, online card payments, EMIs and NEFT alike.

  2. The app checks the sender

Bank texts in India come from headers registered with TRAI, like AX-HDFCBK-T: the operator and circle, the bank's registered name, and since May 2025 a letter for the message type (T for transactional). A person can't send from one, so a text from a friend's number that mentions money is never treated as a bank payment.

  3. It reads the payment on the phone

Amount, debit or credit, merchant and the UPI reference. A debit that also quotes your remaining limit is still a debit; money sent to you is income.

  4. It logs it, with Undo

Trusted, completed payments log themselves, and a notification shows what was logged with an Undo button. Anything uncertain waits as a suggestion for you to confirm.

Which banks' texts it recognises (46)

PennyWise AI names the bank from the text's registered sender. These are the banks and card issuers it recognises by name today. Texts from any other sender registered as a bank are still read; they're just labelled "Bank".

Bank wording changes from time to time. If a payment's text isn't picked up, the app's capture journal shows what it saw and why, so it can be fixed.

Start with your last six months, not an empty app

Most trackers start empty, so the first month tells you nothing. Because your bank's texts are already in your inbox, PennyWise AI can read the last six months of them at once when you allow SMS, so your spending patterns, repeat habits and subscriptions show up on day one.

Logging new payments from texts is free. The one-time six-month import comes with paid Plus (₹79 a month); it isn't part of the 7-day free trial.

Questions people ask

What is an SMS-based expense tracker?

It's an app that reads the payment texts your bank sends and turns them into expense entries automatically, so you don't type anything. It works for UPI, cards and bank debits, because Indian banks text you for each.

Is it safe to give an expense tracker SMS permission?

It depends on the app. PennyWise AI reads texts on your phone, counts only those from registered bank senders, and saves only the payment (amount, merchant, date) to your account. It never asks for your bank password or UPI PIN.

Does SMS tracking work for credit card spends?

Yes. Banks text you for card payments too, and a spend alert that also quotes your available limit is still read as a payment.

Does it work on iPhone?

No. iOS doesn't let apps read your texts, so SMS-based trackers are Android only. PennyWise AI is on Android.
