How to track spending when you pay with CRED (without counting your card twice)

CRED pays your card bills and your UPI payments. Only one of those is spending. Here's how to track CRED without your month looking twice as expensive as it was.

The short answer

Count the card purchases, not the card bill. When you pay a ₹20,000 credit card bill on CRED, that money paid for things you already bought with the card. Track each card swipe as it happens, track CRED's UPI payments as spending, and leave the bill payment out. Otherwise every card purchase counts twice.

Why CRED users see their spending doubled

Here's a typical month. You buy groceries for ₹2,400 and shoes for ₹3,600 on your credit card. Next month you pay the ₹6,000 bill through CRED, from your bank account. Your phone gets three messages about money leaving: two card alerts and one bank debit for the bill.

One month of card spending, three messages
MessageAmountIs it spending?
Card alert: groceries₹2,400Yes
Card alert: shoes₹3,600Yes
Bank debit: card bill paid via CRED₹6,000No. It pays for the two above

A tracker that adds up every debit reports ₹12,000. The real figure is ₹6,000. PennyWise AI recognises card bill payment messages, such as "Payment of Rs.6,000 has been received towards your credit card", and doesn't count them as spending, because the card's purchases already were.

What CRED itself tells you

CRED's listing describes a membership for people with a credit score of 750 or more, with these money-tracking features:

  • Manage multiple credit cards without each bank's card app.
  • Smart statements for insights into card spending.
  • Spot hidden charges and duplicate spends on your cards.
  • Track your credit score and bank balance.

That's a strong view of your cards. It isn't your whole month: UPI payments from PhonePe or Google Pay, debit card swipes, EMIs and rent by bank transfer happen elsewhere. CRED also offers personal loans and pay-later, so its app is about credit as much as tracking.

How to track CRED with everything else

  1. Install PennyWise AI on Android

It reads your bank's texts and payment notifications from CRED, PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm and other UPI apps.

  2. Allow SMS access

Your bank's card alerts are how each card purchase gets logged, with the merchant and the card's last four digits.

  3. Allow notification access

So UPI payments you make in CRED log themselves, like any other UPI app.

  4. Pay your card bill on CRED as usual

The bill payment isn't added to your spending. The purchases behind it are already in your month, under their own categories.

Questions people ask

Is paying a credit card bill an expense?

Not a new one. The bill pays for purchases you already made with the card. Count the purchases when they happen and leave the bill payment out, or each purchase is counted twice.

Does CRED track my spending?

CRED shows your credit cards in one place, with smart statements and alerts for hidden charges and duplicate spends. It doesn't cover debit card swipes, UPI payments from other apps or bank debits such as EMIs.

Do UPI payments made in CRED count as spending?

Yes. A UPI payment to a shop or a person from CRED is spending, like one from any UPI app. Only the credit card bill payment is left out.

What about rent paid with a credit card on CRED?

Rent paid by card shows up as a card purchase, so it's counted once, and you can file it under Rent. When you later pay the card bill, that payment isn't counted again.
