How to track your Google Pay spending in India

Google Pay can now answer questions about your UPI spending. It only sees Google Pay. Here's how to cover the rest of your month too.

The short answer

In Google Pay, your transaction history lists every UPI payment made through the app, and Ask Google Pay (launched July 2026, opt-in) can break last month's Google Pay spending into categories. To track card swipes, bank debits and other UPI apps as well, use a tracker that reads all your payment alerts.

What Ask Google Pay does, and what it can't see

On 29 July 2026 Google launched Ask Google Pay in India, a Gemini chatbot inside the app. Once you turn on Personalisation, you can ask about last month's spending and get a pie chart by category, with notes on where to cut, typed or spoken in 10 Indian languages.

It's genuinely useful, with one built-in limit: it answers from your Google Pay UPI history. Everything you paid another way is outside its view.

How to track Google Pay and everything else automatically

Each Google Pay payment produces a notification from Google Pay and usually a text from your bank. A tracker that reads those on your phone logs the payment as it happens. Because it reads every bank and UPI app the same way, card and bank payments end up in the same list.

  1. Install PennyWise AI

Free on Android. It reads payment alerts from Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, CRED, Amazon Pay and WhatsApp Pay, and from your bank's app and texts.

  2. Allow notification access, and SMS if you want card and bank debits too

That's the whole setup. There's no bank login to link.

  3. Pay as usual

When a Google Pay payment completes, it logs itself and a notification shows the amount, merchant and category, with Undo for anything it got wrong.

  4. Ask your money anything

On Plus, the AI Coach answers questions like "why was this month expensive?" from all of your payments, not just one app's.

Questions people ask

Does Google Pay track expenses?

Google Pay keeps a history of your Google Pay payments, and since July 2026 Ask Google Pay can sort last month's Google Pay spending into categories once Personalisation is on. It doesn't include card payments, bank debits or other UPI apps.

How do I check my monthly spending in Google Pay?

Open your transaction history in Google Pay, or ask Ask Google Pay about last month's spending. For a monthly total across Google Pay, PhonePe, cards and your bank, use an expense tracker that reads all your payment alerts.

Will my Google Pay payments show up twice if my bank also texts me?

Not in PennyWise AI. It recognises the Google Pay alert and the bank text as the same payment, by the UPI reference number when there is one, and keeps one entry. Undo removes anything that slips through.

Does it need my Google account or UPI PIN?

No. PennyWise AI reads the payment notifications on your phone. It never asks for your UPI PIN, bank password or Google login, and it can't move money.
