What is UPI Lite?
UPI Lite is a small wallet inside your UPI app for low-value payments. You move some money into it from your bank account, and then pay small amounts from that balance with a tap, without entering your UPI PIN each time. It sits in the same app you already use for UPI.
NPCI, which runs UPI, built it for everyday low-value payments. NPCI says to treat the balance like cash, so it's for spending money, not keeping money. Think of it as the coins in your pocket, while your bank account stays the wallet at home.
UPI Lite vs normal UPI
Normal UPI takes money straight from your bank account and asks for your UPI PIN on every payment. UPI Lite pays from a balance you loaded earlier, so small payments go through without a PIN. You still use your PIN when you add money. Bigger payments stay on normal UPI.
| UPI Lite | Normal UPI | |
|---|---|---|
| Money comes from | A balance you loaded into UPI Lite | Your bank account, directly |
| UPI PIN on each payment | No | Yes |
| Largest single payment | ₹1,000 | Much higher, set by NPCI and your bank |
| Most it can hold | ₹5,000 at any time | Whatever is in your account |
| Good for | Tea, auto fares, small shop bills | Rent, bills, transfers, big buys |
What is the UPI Lite limit?
You can pay up to ₹1,000 in a single UPI Lite payment, and your UPI Lite balance can hold up to ₹5,000 at any point in time. RBI set these limits in a circular dated 4 December 2024, which took effect immediately. Before that, the limits were ₹500 a payment and ₹2,000 in total.
₹1,000
The most you can pay in one UPI Lite payment. The balance itself can hold up to ₹5,000.
RBI first announced the higher limits in its policy statement of 9 October 2024 and then changed its rules for small offline payments to match. Some apps and articles still show the old ₹500 and ₹2,000 figures. If your app shows something different, your bank or app may not have updated yet, so go by what the app says.
How to turn on UPI Lite and add money
Open your UPI app and look for UPI Lite, usually on the home screen or in your profile. Pick the bank account to load it from, choose an amount up to ₹5,000, and confirm. Adding money happens online and needs your authentication. The exact menu names differ by app.
Find UPI Lite in your app
Look on the home screen, in your profile, or under payment settings. Search the app for "Lite" if you can't see it.
Choose a bank account
This is the account the money comes from when you load or top up.
Add an amount
Start small. ₹500 to ₹1,000 covers a week of tea and short rides for most people.
Confirm with your UPI PIN
RBI's rules say adding money must happen online with an extra layer of authentication.
Pay small amounts with a tap
When you scan a QR code for a small amount, your app can pay from UPI Lite without asking for the PIN.
RBI's October 2024 policy statement also mentions an automatic top-up facility for UPI Lite. Whether your app offers it, and how you set it, depends on the app.
What UPI Lite is good for
UPI Lite suits small, frequent payments where speed matters more than anything else: a ₹20 tea, a ₹60 auto ride, a ₹150 grocery top-up at the corner shop, a parking fee. You tap and pay without typing a PIN, so the queue keeps moving. Anything bigger is better on normal UPI.
- Tea, snacks and street food. The classic ₹10 to ₹100 payment.
- Auto and short cab rides. Quick to settle when you're getting out.
- Small shop bills. Milk, bread, a pen, a phone cover.
- Parking fees. Where the attendant is waiting.
What to watch: small payments add up
The same thing that makes UPI Lite handy makes it easy to forget. No PIN means no pause, and a ₹30 payment rarely feels like spending. Ten of those a week is ₹1,200 a month. Check what you spent from UPI Lite every week or two, so the small taps don't turn into a big total.
Small payments are the ones people lose track of most. See how small expenses add up over a year, and why UPI makes overspending easy. A simple habit helps: load only what you plan to spend this week. When the balance runs out, that's your signal to look back before topping up.
Do UPI Lite payments show in your bank statement?
It varies by bank and app. The money you load into UPI Lite leaves your bank account, so the load shows up. RBI's rules let banks send combined alerts instead of one alert per payment, so small payments may not show one by one. Your app's UPI Lite history shows each payment.

Questions people ask
Is UPI Lite safe?
UPI Lite runs on UPI, which NPCI operates under RBI's rules. Payments skip the PIN, so keep a screen lock or app lock on your phone. Since it holds at most ₹5,000, a lost phone puts less at risk than your full account. Tell your bank quickly if your phone is lost.
What is the UPI Lite limit?
Up to ₹1,000 a payment, and up to ₹5,000 in the UPI Lite balance at any point in time. RBI set these limits in its circular of 4 December 2024.
Can I get my UPI Lite balance back to my bank?
Yes. When you disable UPI Lite in your app, NPCI says the balance goes back to your bank account. Do this before you change phones or uninstall the app.
Which apps support UPI Lite?
Most major UPI apps support it, but not every bank does. Open your UPI app and search for UPI Lite, or check the app's help section.
